Photoshop technique to aid in reading a manuscript?

I am involved in a class project where we are reading 3rd century CE manuscripts. The one we are reading has palimpsest, or underlying text that was later written over. Are there any techniques I could use in Photoshop to make this faded text stand out in comparison to the top layer of text? I've heard of X-Ray like effects as well as something mocking ultraviolet light, but am not sure how to do either.

You could try to up the contrast, or sharpen the image. Or change the levels by making the dark areas stand out?

There are three possible reasons for this problem:

1. You are not using a compatible operating system or there is not sufficient space

2. Your system cannot read the archive file

3. You did not recieve a legal version of PhotoShop.

I recommend using the Gimp; it is both simpler and more powerful than PhotoShop, plus its free at gimp.org
You have to check with adobe %26 make sure it is a legal copy.
i think you got that from some p2p or torrent site or something. and if i'm right, then that's illegal. however, about your question, it only means that the photoshop installer you got has a problem. the guy who shared it might have shared a bogus file.

Strange, the best you can do is make sure your 1gb of system ram is not maxed at the time. The computer you have is decent enough to run PS pretty well, so I would start there.

One thing I would do if handed your computer is stop everything from loading when you boot up that you do not need and do not even use. Go to Programs -%26gt; Startup and get rid of icons in there. go to Start -%26gt; Run -%26gt; and type MSCONFIG. Go to the startup tab and see if there is anything in there that you can uncheck.

Well first off it's a laptop processor, which means it is slower than a desktop processor and it is only 1.8ghz.

Also 1 gig of ram isn't enough, you need 2 gigs of ram to run CS3 properly. 1 gig is the MINIMUM required to run CS3 software.
