Adobe Photoshop series. If u know how to get the tools working, u wont need to get another software. the latest version of Adobe Photoshop is CS2. its almost the same as the 7.0 too so u wont have to worry about much on anything.

How to make a jedi sword in the easiest way:

1. Make a new doc. I always set my document's properties with 150 resolution.

2. first, make the handle of the sword in a new layer. Be sure to make a new layer as drawing onto the background doesnt allow u to change the blending options. In case u did and u have finished drawing the whole lot of the handle, you can right click the 'background' from the layers palette and click 'duplicate layer'. It will become a new layer and u can change the blending options there.

3. When u have finished the handle, make a new layer and lock the handle layer by clicking onto the small 'padlock' on the layer palette whilst on the handle layer.

4. Onto the new layer, (u might wanna call this the 'blade' or 'glowing thingy') get a round brush that is the size of around 35 px or depending on the size of ur handle.

5. Pick a colour from ur colours palette (lets make this darth's so its red) and draw the 'blade'. It does look like its bland and plain, aint it? But thats alright, thats where we actually start the fun.
