when i open photoshop, the boxes at the right hand side of the screen appear (the ones with layers and history e.c.t) but recently the 'layers' tab at the top of the bottom box hasnt appeared, does anyone know how to add the tab back to the box?

Choose Layers from the Window Menu (or hit F7). Verified on a Mac using Photoshop CS3.

you can reset your work area to default. go under the last menu option on the top menu and select "default workspace"
Click the WINDOW menu and click LAYERS. You can also press the f7 key on your keyboard.
Incidentally, in all versions of Photoshop up to and including CS2, the 'boxes' are called palates. Now in CS3 they're called panels.
