Photoshop Question- fading?

I was wondering if anyone might know how to create an opacity gradient in Photoshop 7.0?

I need to do a project and I want to make an object look like it's slowly fading away from one end to another for the cover.

If you could instruct me on how to do so, or list the steps, I would be greatly appreciative.

Any advice would be great if you know!

Thanks a lot.

Easy.

1) Add a layer mask by pressing the button at the bottom of your layers panel. (It looks like a flag with a white circle)

2) Now use the gradient tool (hot key "g") and make sure you have a gradient from white to black

3) now simply draw a gradient. The white will keep the image and parts that are black will be transparent.

Create a new image with a transparent background. Copy your image and a new layer in that image. Click on the mask button (or add layer mask) in your layers window and click on the layer mask. then select the gradient tool and set your foreground color as black. drag the gradient across the layer and it will fade your image for you. You can adjust the gradient tools to get the result you want.

When looking at the gradient options screen, there's the color of the gradient on the bottom of the bar, and then there's little boxes just like those on the top of the bar. Click on the box on the top of it, then there's a opacity slider somewhere in that window (bottom somewhere). Just lower that number, and the gradient should fade.
