Photoshop CS2 Question?

I'm a mac user with Photoshop CS2, and I was wondering how to make a new layer only affect a certain layer. (Like If it was bigger than the layer I wanted it to affect, it would still only be exactly as large as the shape under it.

I'm trying to make this...

Do this...

See how the shadow for the eye is only over that one layer? I'm trying to do that, but grouping it didn't work (I grouped it under that layer and the layer that's the circle disappeared)

Does anyone know?

I think what you want to do Layer Mask for "Like If it was bigger than the layer I wanted it to affect, it would still only be exactly as large as the shape under it."

Take a look at the blending options in Layer Styles... when you double click to bring up the layer styles and the first dialog is the blending mode, towards the bottom there is a Blend If option... try dragging the bottommost slider.
